Many fish in the freshwater hobby are tropical, thus they need warm water to thrive. Tropical fish that do not have warm water will display a wide array of side effects such as color dullness, lethargy, the inability to reproduce or hatch a brood, hiding, sitting in the, same spot, reduced apatite, a shortened lifespan, clamped fins, and even death.
Most tropical fish need a temp of 76-80 F. You can reach this temp by adding an aquarium heater. If you live in a tropical location, your outdoor temp may already reach this without an aquarium heater.
Coldwater fish such as goldfish and koi do NOT need an aquarium heater.
